Golf is a game that can be played by people of all abilities, physical fitness and level of wealth. How do you go about finding ones that are suitable for you?
Finding out how much courses cost is easy enough. Simply search the internet for courses in the area you wish play and, if they have websites, the information on cost per person per round should be available for you to see. If not, a simple call to them should establish how much you would be expected to pay. Generally, the higher profile the course is, the more expensive it is. Don’t let that put you off the less well-known courses though. In many parts of the world, such as Scotland, they pride themselves in the quality of their public courses.
For many, the most important factor is how hard the course is. Depending on what you are playing for on a particular day can be a factor in deciding this i.e. Is it a social catch up with a friend? or are you after a challenge? The best way to find out how hard a course is, is by looking at the handicap for each hole. This should give a good indication of the difficulty level compared to your own abilities. Again, individual golf club websites should have this information or you can call/email them for information.
Finally, the most difficult factor to establish is how physically demanding a course will be. The most obvious thing to look at is the length of the course; the longer it is, the farther you have to walk (unless you have a buggy). Most 18 hole courses are around 4 miles in length and when you add to this the demands of carrying your clubs and the physical exertion of actually swinging the club, you can end up pretty tired by the end of a round. What you don’t know from looking at the length of a course is the terrain: Is it undulating hills? Is there a lot of sand or water hazards? It’s probably best to find this out before you book up in case the demands of the course spoil your enjoyment.
